‘Poh Phutti’, a Book of Punjabi Poetry by Pir Nek Alam Cheema

Lt Col Rashid Zia Cheema (Retd)

My great grandfather Pir Nek Alam Cheema was a Head Master and had taught in many Government schools in Gujrat and Jhelum districts before the Partition. He had also obtained law degree but I think he did not practice law. He has written three books in Punjabi, namely ‘Poh Phutti’, ‘Suchi Maala’ and ‘Asghar Sughraan’.
‘Poh Phutti’ (Crack of Dawn) is a 64-page book of Punjabi poetry. It was once in the syllabus of Punjabi Fazil and Adib Fazil examinations of Punjab University. This book has many topics, mainly advice to daughters, address to young girls, advice to adult girls, address to grown ups, spiritual touch, Rajoo towards Dastan (Story), followed by Pir Ka Banjara.
This book was got reprinted by our uncle Haji Abdul Shakoor Cheema (Late), father of Lt Col Sajid Bari Cheema (3rd Special Short Course) ex 23 FF. The complete poem titled ‘Poh Phutti’ and the Sabab e-Tasneef (Cause of writing) has been covered from pages 3 to 13. These pages are posted here.
I am thankful to Lt Col Sajid Bari Cheema for contributing the first 13 pages of this book.

Thanks to Cheemas for sharing this excellent Sufi poetry; where have you been hiding it all these years? I have yet to grasp it fully despite consulting my Punjabi – Urdu dictionary and, therefore, endorse Maj Mustafa Ghulam for its translation. And yes, it beautifully reflects on your distinct literary taste and abilities.
    Looking forward to see more.
    Prayers and warm regards,
    Lala

Beautiful Punjabi Poetry, few may understand because we Punjabis give little importance to our own traditions, customs and language. Maybe we have been ruled mostly by others, even today by Kashmiris.
