C-in-C/COAS Cane Winners in PMA

Being compiled by Lt Col Rashid Zia Cheema (R) 2nd SSC

The Chief of Army Staff Cane (Previously known as Commander-in-Chief Cane) is awarded to that Gentleman Cadet (or Gentlewoman Cadet) from a War Course/Special Short Course/Graduate Course/Technical Graduate Course who achieves an overall best performance during his or her entire training period at the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul. The award of COAS Cane is considered as a great honour and it is the cherished dream of all cadets.

The cadets from Integrated Course and Lady Cadets’ Course are awarded with Commandant’s Cane. Passing Out Parade of Mujahid Course-1 was held with 127 PMA Long Course on 20 April 2013. Can any reader inform what kind of Cane does this course get?  The cadets from PMA Long Courses are awarded with Sword of Honour.

There were however two exceptions when cadets from 9th Graduate Course (21 April 1973) and 10 Graduate Course (20 Oct 1973) were awarded Sword of Honour instead of C-in-C Cane. Due to 1971 War, there were no Long Courses after the Passing Out Parade of 48 PMA (11 Dec 1971) and a few short courses and Graduate courses were run. The Passing Out Parade of the next Long Course, 49 PMA, was held on 19 April 1974. During this period only 9th and 10th Graduate Courses were given Sword of Honour.

Due to 1965 War, 37 PMA Long Course was converted into a short course therefore on 7 May 1966 BSUO Kamal Alam was given C-in-C Cane instead of Sword of Honour.

Interestingly 2nd, 4th and 8th War Courses were awarded two C-in-C Canes. For details about 8th War Course, please read the comment of the Cane winner Lt Col (R) Nisar Sarwar (See his comment dated 17 May 2014 {11:08 am} in the Comment Box) as to why two Canes were given in his Course.

This Post will show the photos of all COAS Cane winners receiving this coveted award on their Passing Out Parade. COAS Cane winners from OTS Kohat/OTS Mangla will Insha Allah be shown later in another Post. The Sword of Honour Winners Post can be seen here.
It will also be interesting to know at what rank did these officers retire!!

Editor: This page is under development and the photos/details will be added as and when received from the officers of different courses. Details can be written in the Comment Box at the end of this page while the photos can be sent to the Editor at: nativepakistan@gmail.com

Some errors about the names and appointments, etc, of Cane Winners have been found on the PMA Roll of Honour Boards. The same have been indicated in Red colour in this Post, hoping some PMA officials sees it and correct the record.

Kamal Alam expired in AFIC a few years ago due to complications as a result of heart surgery.

  2. Agha Mansoor Ali says:

    Dear Sir,
Technical Graduate Course 1 (TGC 1) which passed out in October 1994 had Sgt. Umar Ahmed Shah as Cane winner. He was commissioned in Signals and now is Brigadier.
I was a paying cadet with this course and have a very solid affiliation with TGC 1, Military College of Signals and Corps of Signals.
    Best Regards

  3. Dear Col Cheema, Commendable work. I am from 2nd War Course. During the passing out parade held on 4th June 1966, late Muhammad Humayun Khan (Engrs, retired as Brig) was awarded with C-in-C’s Cane. Ghulam Waris has been wrongly included in the list that you may like to review/amend.

  4. Dear Sir,
Data of COAS cane awardees of TGC-1 to TGC-5 is missing. Apparently, it is missing from the honour board at PMA museum as well (as evident from the picture). Please add it too. For TGC-5 it is:-

    TGC-5; 11 Oct 97; CJUO Asim B. Warraich

  5. Lt Col Muhammad Zahid Amin (R), Arty (3rd SSC) says:

    Dear Col Cheema,
Your efforts in compiling and preserving this historical data is really commendable. As rightly pointed out by you, the name of COAS Cane holder from 3rd SSC is missing from the Honour Board. It is really astonishing that such a glaring mistake has been made by someone in PMA. 3rd SSC is the biggest course in the history of PMA. A total of 784 cadets reported and 626 were passed out.
The COAS Cane was awarded to BSUO SAEEDULLAH KHAN who was commissioned in AC on 19 August 1972. He retired as MAJ GEN. Truly a fine human being, a through professional soldier he was very popular amongst his course mates and colleagues. He died of cancer a few years ago. May Allah place him at the highest abode in Jannatul Firdous. Aameen.

This anomaly has now been pointed out to the officer incharge of PMA Museum, where presently all such records have been preserved. Our course mate Col (Retd) Abdur Rauf visited the Museum last week and dug out the record. Three or four photos of the passing out parade is present in the record. In one of the photos BSUO Saeedullah Khan is receiving the coveted COAS Cane from the chief guest.

    • Dear Col Zahid Amin,
Thanks for providing the details about C-in-C Cane winner of 3rd SSC. The info has been included in the Post.

  6. Javed Hussain says:

    Sir,
EXCELLENT contribution for posterity. There are many OTS officers who rose to the rank of Generals, notably Gen Chisti, Gen K.M. Arif, Gen Durrani. They had also being part of ARMY. Many from OTS Mangla have also become Generals, like Major General Nadir, commanding in Swat. You may like to include them also.
10th OTS BSUO was from 1 Punjab and retired as Major General.

    • Dear Javed Hussain,
Please send the photos of some C-in-C/COAS Cane winners form OTS Kohat and Mangla, a post will be initiated for them as well.
      Regards,

  7. Col Naeem Jan Amin (R) says:

    Dear Col Cheema,
    AOA,
A commendable piece of work and I greatly appreciate the forthrightness of the comments above especially about selecting award winners.
I, as Course Under Officer, or CUO, won the COAS Cane in Oct 1977, being from 18 Graduate Course. My name has always been “Naeem Jan Amin” the Honour Roll Board wrongly shows it as “Naeem Ameen”. I would be grateful if you could convey the correction to PMA Kakul.
    Thanks a bundle.

    • Dear Col Naeem Jan Amin,
This mistake has been mentioned in the Post in red colour, hoping that some official from PMA reads it and the correction is made on the Honour Board.

  8. Lt Col Fawad Farrukh Butt says:

    Dear Sir,
A wonderful effort that will go a long way. For record: CUO FAWAD FARRUKH BUTT was awarded COAS Cane for Integrated Course – 9, passed out in Oct 93. Likewise the awardees of COAS Cane are not shown on roll of honour displayed in PMA from 1990 to 1999. You may look into this error.
    With profound regards.

    • Dear Col Fawad Farrukh Butt,
I have mentioned about this mistake in the Post in red colour, hoping that some official from PMA reads it and the names of all the Cane winners are mentioned on the Honour Board.

      • Lt Col Fawad Farrukh Butt says:

        Dear Sir,
I personally owe you gratitude for your prompt update of record on website. Your effort is commendable and has already left a footprint for generations to come. I wanted to update question marks on info pertaining to my parent unit and alma mater, which is as follows:-
Parent unit: 503 Aviation Base Workshop EME
Alma mater: COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING, PAF ACADEMY, RISALPUR
Hopefully with your persistent efforts PMA authorities will update/display COAS CANE awardees on honour boards.
        With profound regards

  9. Lt Col Shahid Bashir, AEC says:

    Dear Sir,
    AOA
    Great undertaking!
I would like to add some info regarding IC-8. Yours truly, CUO (Course Under Offr) Shahid Bashir was awarded COAS’ Cane on 18 Apr 1993.
    Regards.

  10. Dear Col Cheema,
There seems an error if you may look into. My course, 24th War Course is missing from the ‘honor board’ which passed out on 5th Sep 1970 and given the seniority from 6th Sep 1970. BSUO, Bilal Ahmad, was given the Cane. The course is senior to all SSC, 6th Graduate Course onwards, and though it passed out before 43 PMa Long Course but 45 PMA L/C was given a day seniority over it.
I also remember, if correctly that BSUO Mehmood Shah was given the Cane for 22nd War Course.
    Regards,
Brig (R) Dr. Muhammad Aslam Khan Niazi, SI(M), PhD

    • Dear Brig Aslam Niazi,
Thanks for the info, it has been added in the Post against the C-in-C Cane winner of 24th War Course.
However, according to a book published by PMA, the winner of Cane from 22nd war Course is BSUO Tahir Wadood Malik. If you have email address of Mehmood Shah, one can confirm it from him.
      Regards,

  11. Brig Razi Uddin (Retd) says:

I am from 13 Graduate Course which passed out on 19 April 1975. My name is incorrectly written on the Honour Board. Instead of CJUO Razi Ullah, it should read CSUO Razi Uddin. I will be grateful if this could kindly be corrected by PMA.
Our felicitations to Col Cheema for this wonderful work
    Regards,
    Brig Razi Uddin (Retd)

    • Dear Brig Razi,
Both mistakes have been mentioned in the Post in red colour, hoping that some official from PMA reads it and the correction is made on the Honour Board.

  12. Lt Col (R) Muhammad Iqbal (23rd Graduate Course) says:

I appreciate the commendable job done by you, sir.
I am Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Iqbal from 23rd Graduate Course which passed out on 23 Oct 1980. I’m the winner of COAS Cane but my name is wrongly written on the Honour Board in PMA and ‘Khan’ has been added at the end of my name. Could you please get this rectified or suggest me who to approach on email as I’m out of Pakistan?
Once again I thank you for your good job.

    • Dear Col Iqbal,
This mistake has been mentioned in the Post in red colour, hoping that some official from PMA reads it and the correction is made on the Honour Board.

  13. Aoa.
    Great work!!
Can I get the names of the officers who passed out from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst?

  14. Maj Ayyaz Ahmed Sipra (7th War Course) says:

    Great work!
I am winner C-in-C Cane ex 7th War Course (Passing Out Parade on 17 Dec 1966).
Just surprised that my name is misspelt on the board! ‘Ayaz’ should be ‘Ayyaz’.

    • Dear Sir,
Please send an email to PMA and ask them to correct the spellings of your name.
Please send me your photo for this Post. You retired in which rank?
      Regards,

      • Col Cheema
I left the Army as a result of the Attock case of 1973 !
I was a Major at that time !
Thank you for a commendable undertaking !

        • Sir,
What about my request about your photo?

          • Ayyaz Ahmed Sipra says:

Unfortunately I no longer have any photos in my possession !

There is a page on Facebook, Seventh War Course, which has some photos
that include the group photo after the Passing Out Parade in which I am sitting in the middle between the Commandant Brig. Mitha and the Chief Guest Gen. Tikka.

There are also some photos of the Rehearsal in one of which I am next to Brig. Mitha during the Review !

These photos are on the Seventh War Course FB page under ” Ghaznavi Company 16 photos ”

My apologies Col Cheema for my inability to fulfill a simple request !

            Best regards !!

  15. Lt Col (Retd) Obaid Zia ( 15th Technical Graduate Course ) says:

    Dear Col Cheema
While appreciating your tremendous inputs , I would like to highlight few mistakes in the PMA’s Honour Board for the COAS Cane winners . I got the cane in Apr 1976 and my name is there but the spellings are ” OBED AZIZ ” whereas , it should be ” OBED ZIA ” . Similarly , the next name is of “SHAHZAD FAROOQ” but its written as ” SHAHZADA FAROOQ “. Just thought of pointing it out .

    • Dear Col Obed Zia,
I will InshaAllah write the correct spellings of your name with your photo. The photo sent by you on my email address is very small. Can you please send some large photo, as other photos in this Post?
I have a little observation. You say that the correct spellings of your name should be “Obed Zia” but at the top of your comment you have written the spellings as “Obaid Zia”. I should follow which spellings?

      • Lt Col (Retd) Obaid Zia ( 15th Technical Graduate Course ) says:

        Dear Col Cheema,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply . Yes , I was already anticipating an observation coming so let me clarify it . I used to spell my name as ” Obed Zia ” but after my retirement , changed it to ” Obaid Zia “. It was done due to certain circumstances . You may follow ” Obaid Zia ” as this is now going to stay till the end .
I will certainly try to get and send you a larger photo .
        Warm Regards

        • Dear Col Obed Zia,
I humbly suggest that let it be as “Obed Zia” because it was your name in PMA. When they (PMA authorities) will correct the writing on the Honour Board, they will spell your name as “Obed Zia” as per their correct record.

          • Lt Col (Retd) Obaid Zia says:

            Dear Col Cheema,
Yes , you are absolutely right. I also feel it should have the same spellings as they were there in the PMA’s records.
            Warm Regards,

  16. Azhar Ahmad Sahibzada says:

    Dear Sir,

I believe my father, Captain Iftikhar Ahmed Sahibzada, Guides Cavalry, was awarded the C-In-C Cane in 1954. He was from 9th PMA, and just lost out on the Sword of Honour to his good friend Mr. Umar Afridi.

In 1960 he transferred from the Army to the Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP). He died at the young age of 35 in December 1969 of a Heart Attack near Gilgit where he was posted as the Political Agent.

I will e-mail you some photos of him in Military Uniform. Regards Azhar Sahibzada

  17. Dear Cheema,
Good. My parent unit and all other particulars are correct.
    Stay blessed always!
    Warm regards.

  18. Lt Col Bazlur Rahman, Retd (45th PMA) says:

    Dear Cheema,
Looking at the Honour Board I have some observations,
    1. Getting commission on 19-05-1966 BSUO Muhammad Mujibur Rahman (Special Course) also got C-in-C’s Cane along with CSUO Muhammad Ashraf Hussain (6th War Course)
    2. Getting Commission on 22-03-1968 (14th War Course) it is BSUO Muhammad Salam not BSUO Muhammad Aslam.
    3. On the Honour Board I don’t find the Name of BSUO/CSUO Syed Muhammad Ibrahim (24th War Course). 24th WC got commission on 06-09-1970.
    Best Regards

    • Editor says:

      Dear Col Bazlur Rahman,
Thanks for pointing out the mistakes in PMA Honour Board. I will InSha Allah correct them in the actual pics, as and when received.

  19. Lt Col (R) Zafar Mustafa (6th OTS) says:

I would like to place on record that GCs of 6th to 9th OTS Courses run at OTS Kohat between Jan 1958 and June 1961 were given following awards :
    1. Best overall performance —-Sword of Honour.
    2. Runner-up for Sword of Honour ——– CinC’s Cane.
    3. Best GC in Academics — Academics Medal.
From memory I recall that a Bengali GC named AKM Shamsud – duha who was commissioned in Ack Ack Arty got the Sword of Honour in 5th OTS Course that passed out in May/June 1953 from OTS Kohat. I have no knowledge about the awards given to GCs of 1st to 4th OTS Courses.

    • Editor says:

      Sir,
Thanks for the info. The winners of Sword of Honour & C-in-C Cane from OTS Kohat and Mangla will be added in a separate Post. I am just waiting for one pic and then the Post will be created and other pics will be added as and when received.

      • Dear Cheema,
You are doing a great job!! I really appreciate it and pray for you to continue doing good work with the resolve you are showing.
Just a suggestion, do not have separate pages for Sword of honor and C-In-C/COAS Cane. In my opinion, it would look better if you keep just one page for all these top achievers (Sword or Cane), it will not only avoid any discrimination but also be helpful in determining the order of seniority of these high achiever with one touch of a button only. What do you think?
Any way, keep up the good work!

        • Editor says:

          Dear Sir,
I appreciate your valuable suggestion but due to the technical limitations of my website it will not be possible to add so many pics on one page. However, I have given links of all relevant pages in each Post.
          Regards.

  20. Lt Col (R) Zafar Mustafa (6 OTS Course), Coy Comd with 2nd SSC says:

Perhaps it is divine justice that the board shows Lt Gen (R) Mohsin Kamal of 2nd SSC as BSUO, an appointment which he deserved on merit but passed out on top of the course as CSUO.
Col Nisar Sarwar Khara is requested to throw light on two winners of COAS Cane from the same course(? ) including himself.

    • Editor says:

Sir, the Board misses the C-in-C Cane winner from 3rd SSC (Passing Out Parade on 19 Aug 1972).

    • About having two C-in-C Canes in our course (8th War Course), at that time, I did not understand the logic or reasons for awarding two “awards” meant for only one “position”, but in hindsight and after learning a lot about “tricks of trade” and intricacies of life (through experience), the only reason that I can work out is that the award of 2nd cane to BSUO (by the way he stood 4th in the Course with me being 1st) was a kind of “face saving act” by his Bn, Coy and Pl Comds who in their “assessment sessions” first made him BSUO and then in a “preliminary” final assessment, without waiting for compilation of whole results on the course basis, declared him the best all rounder. Incidentally our course of around 250 cadets, comprised of two Coys; Slahuddin Coy at 1st Pak Bn, Kakul (my Coy) and Aurangzeb Coy at 2nd Pak Bn, Tobe Camp, (BSUO Mujahid’s coy).

The assessors took it for granted that BSUO will be the “BEST CADET”. Even in the rehearsals for Passing Out Parade which started about a couple of weeks before “D Day”, he was the only one that used to be called for awarding C-in-C cane. Unfortunately for those who thought (and declared) him to be the best, got a rude shock when the Final result/assessment left him at 4th place and me at the top position of the course!!! Interestingly, just a couple of days before Passing Out, during one of the rehearsals for Passing Out Parade, I was told to do a bit of rehearsal for receiving the Cane (without telling me whether I was getting it or not). I was surprised and considered it a kind of routine as we all knew that our BSUO was getting the cane.

Any way, during the rehearsal when my name was called for receiving the cane, I started marching towards the dais with my rifle at shoulder arm (I was CSM, having no sword!). The Adjt shouted telling me to “ground arm” and then march, which I did clumsily…. So that was it.
Despite me standing first in the course I was not getting the cane, as me getting cane would had “exposed” the “assessors” mistake/blunders/errors/faults by making wrong assessment. It were my Bn Comd, Coy Comd and Pl Comd who put their foot down and with final word from the Commandant, saying “let the best one get the best!!!” that I was awarded Cane. A few days earlier, I had already been awarded the “BEST IN TACTICS” and “BEST IN MAP READING” medal/shield.

So now when I was declared the best and got the cane the situation for the BSUO (and his assessors), who had already been told by his Pl Comd that he was getting the cane (to which whole academy knew) became very awkward. So to cover it up, it was decided that he should also be awarded the cane on the basis of being the best cadet in his Coy. So, it was like, me being the “Best All Round Cadet” of the whole course while BSUO the best cadet in his Coy.

This is the story of two Canes for one position!

      • Lt Col (R) Zafar Mustafa (6 OTS Course) says:

During service, I heard the following story about 2nd PMA Long Course.
The BSUO did not get any award. A CSUO who passed out second in order of merit got the Sword of Honour. A CJUO passed out as number one in the Course and got the Norman Medal.
The last mentioned officer was my DS in Staff College and confirmed the story. As to why this rigmarole, he answered “idiosyncrasies of people who mattered”.

During my 3 years of PMA tenure as Coy/Term Comd (1971-74), I fought at least three losing battles insisting that we should stick to our Assessment System while making appointments and also while choosing various award winners. I always argued that whoever is thrown up by the laid down system should get the highest appointment during the final term and whoever tops in the final assessment should get the Sword of Honour. Without going into the merits and not meaning to hurt anyone’s sensibilities, I would broadly touch three cases.
        1. In 2nd SSC (1972) during mid-term assessment, the GC who stood first in the order of merit was not made BSUO.
        2. In the final assessment of 10th Graduate Course (1973), the GC who came out first in overall order of merit was not given Sword of Honour.
        3. Again in the final assessment of 50th Long Course (1974), the GC who was first in the order of merit was not given Sword of Honour.
I admit that politics or meanness was not involved; however, idiosyncrasy of who mattered cannot be denied!

If Lt Col Nisar Sarwar Khara (8th War Course) had mentioned the story of two winners of the Cane in his course while we were serving together in PMA (He as Pl Comd and I as Coy Comd with 2nd SSC in 1971-72), I would have told him the real reason for such an unbelievable happening. I will call him tomorrow on phone and tell him why it happened.

  21. Editor says:

    Dear Brig Noor,
Thanks a lot for providing your Passing Out Parade photo where you are receiving the C-in-C Cane. I am also thankful to you for providing the photos of the Roll of Honour Boards showing winners of C-in-C/COAS Cane from its start in 1966 to 2013. These photos have enabled me to initiate this Post. Other winners of the coveted Cane will follow suit.

    • Brig (R) Noor ud Din Ahmed (6th Graduate Course) says:

Actually I am grateful to you Col Cheema, for taking pains in preserving historical facts and photos for posterity. It is a wonderful website and I keep using it off and on. Thanks once again. May Allah bless you for this. Ameen
