“A Fun in Having the Same Name”

Tariq Saeed

Editor’s Note: Brig Tariq Saeed (Retd) is from Arty. After the retirement, he served as principal of Garrison Cadet College Kohat for 11 long years. He has now settled in Rawalpindi.

In 1980, I was in 32 Medium Regt Arty and we were three Capts in the unit having the same name as Tariq. Once we were attending a Study Period, being conducted by a Brig from some Armour Brigade. During the course of conduct, he started asking questions. There came a question for Capt Tariq. We all started discussing, who to get up and answer the question. In the mean time Brig repeated the name 2-3 times.

The other two Tariqs told me, “We are not getting up. You have to get up and answer the question”.

Having no other option left, I got up and the moment I was up, the Brig got furious and said, “Tariq, why did you take so long to stand?”

I said, “Sir, there are other Capt Tariqs also in the hall.”

He said, “But I specifically called Capt Tariq from 32 Medium.”

I innocently replied,” Sir, we are three Capt Tariqs in 32 Medium as well.”

With this there was a big laughter in the hall and with that fury of Brig was also gone. He smiled and said, “OK, you become escape goat for all Tariqs and answer the question.”
